We get a lot of people who want to know why their server is not starting. The vast majority of times, the cause is a 3rd party modification of some kind. A second runner up would be a configuration file with a syntax error or missing line. This is frustrating for both the user who wants their server to ‘just work’ and the HGS Support team who constantly has to look into the reason servers aren’t starting all the time. Today, we have a solution.

HGSPanel now lets Linux Game Servers view their current output right in the browser. The new ‘Click to View Game Console Debug Logs’ link that appears when your server is running will show you all output from your game server. You will have to reload the page to see new output, but it is directly available to you without having to request SSH and go through all that rigmarole.

To prevent the files from getting too massive, the logs will only be visible when your server is started and the log file will be deleted each time you click start.

Hopefully this will help a lot of people!

I’m thinking about adding clan hosting as a service to the site. People would be able to purchase clan hosting from us which would come with a large mumble voice server and a clan website package that includes a roster, blog, screenshot gallery, calendar, forum and more. If we started hosting this, would you buy it for $2.50/mo?

Beyond that, we’re considering actually making a public clan index on the site that lists all of our clans who have chosen to be public. Clans could have their recruiting status, member count, logo and name all listed there. Once we had a bunch of clans registered, we would start doing tournaments and giving away prizes to the winning clans.

This would move HGS beyond just hosting games and into being a real hub for competitive gaming and clan play. What do you think?

If you check out our stats page you will notice that a new box, Wise is online! Wise is our first North American West Coast server. Wise is sitting in Los Angeles, CA and is ready to host Terraria or Modern Warfare 3 right now!

We don’t have server migrations working yet, so you can’t migrate there from Florida… But we will within a few days!

We recently mentioned that we had Windows game server hosting working. Well, our second game (after Terraria) is going to be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (MW3). Price per slot will start at $0.80 for private slots and $1.10 for public slots. Servers will be un-ranked until we figure out exactly how that all works.

That should set us below the prices of our competitors. Especially when you consider all the cool features that come with our hosting

It’s been a _lot_ of work and we still have four key things to add, but for the most part, Windows game server hosting is online! We are going to be adding Windows games as we figure out how they work. We only have one Windows location right now: Miami, FL. More will come online as we build out our Windows network. I’m sure we will use the same hosting locations we have already.

The key things left to add are:
1) Server Migrations (There is only one location anyway!)
2) Backups (Pretty important)
3) Crash Detection (Helpful)
4) Force Shutdowns (in case someone finds out how to swindle us)

I just got around to writing a little guide on HGSPanel, our very own game server hosting and control panel. It shows the features in screen shots and walks you through a new purchase, settings change and server starting.

It’s not available to the public yet, but internally we have an alpha version of Windows hosting for Terraria up.

Our first true Windows hosting box should be coming online within a few days (depending on Christmas) and we should have the panel ready to host Windows games!

This means we’re going to be able to host a TON more games. Terraria will come back, for one. We will also have any of the Modern Warfare games we can host. We will probably also do Unreal engine games, Crytek games and maybe even Battlefield games that we can get working.

I mean, we probably won’t invest all the hours required to host old games, but if we think people are still buying it, we will want to get it hosted.

We’re excited to finally be able to host _everything_. We have been stuck hosting Minecraft for a long time. Getting more games will be amazing for us.
