With the new Beta 1.03 of Minecraft, Mojang has introduced built in whitelising to Minecraft. Using a whitelist no longer requires you to install mods! This feature is long overdue as griefers have been running wild across as many servers as they can connect to. Just imagine how sad those little kids with flint and tinder are going to be now that you have a designated whitelist.
Heres what Notch posted about whitelisting:
Added whitelisting to the server. To use, enter “whitelist
” where cmd is “on”, “off”, “add ”, “remove ”, “list” or “reload”
Pretty sparse instructions, right? Fear not… better instructions in English follow.
First things first. You must be an op of your server. Edit the ops.txt file and add your account name. One account goes in this file per line. Anyone you add will be a full fledged admin to your server and always allowed to enter, whitelist or not. You may need to restart your server after this is completed.
Second, log back in, press the chat key (t) and enter this command:
At this point, your server is locked down to just the users in your ops.txt file. If you want to add someone else, you use this command:
/whitelist add (playername)
That player will then be able to enter your server. Easy!
To see the current whitelist, enter:
To remove someone, do this:
/whitelist remove (playername)
Finally, you can turn your whitelist off, too. Enter this command:
Lastly, you can add users directly to the white-list.txt file found in the same directory as your server’s .jar file.
